Victorian brewery stables become London's only central spectacle-making workshop
Architecture firm 51 Architecture converted Victorian brewery stables in King's Cross into Cubitts' first headquarters, housing London's only central spectacle-making workshop.
Architecture firm 51 Architecture has converted a Victorian stable block in King's Cross into Cubitts' first dedicated headquarters. The stables originally served a vinegar brewery before falling out of use.
The mews complex, just off Caledonian Road, now houses what Cubitts calls the only spectacle-making workshop in central London. Adaptive reuse of heritage industrial sites for craft businesses is increasingly common in inner London.
Why it mattersIt shows that Victorian industrial buildings can host functioning craft workshops, keeping specialist making in central London rather than pushing it to outer suburbs.
