VIGIL system blocks AI agents from breaching their own stated rules at runtime
Researchers built VIGIL to enforce AI agent behaviour specifications in real time, stopping actions that violate written access and disclosure rules.
VIGIL is a runtime enforcement system for AI agents that interact with files, communications, and physical devices through third-party tools. It monitors agent actions as they happen and blocks those that breach specified rules.
The key challenge is contextual granularity: knowing which events to observe and when a policy boundary has truly been crossed. Policy specifications written in natural language become live, executable constraints.
Why it mattersAs AI agents gain real-world access to files and systems, runtime guardrails address a genuine gap between written policy and actual agent behaviour.
