UK Halves Tariff-Free Steel Quota from July 1 to Counter Chinese Oversupply
From 1 July the UK will halve its tariff-free steel import quota and double the duty on excess imports, mirroring simultaneous EU restrictions.
The UK government will halve its tariff-free steel import allowance from 1 July under new safeguard rules. Duty on imports above the revised quota will double, raising the cost for overseas suppliers.
The changes coincide with similar EU restrictions introduced for the same reason. Both sets of measures target the global oversupply of cheap Chinese steel that has been undercutting domestic producers.
Why it mattersSteel buyers and construction firms face higher import costs above the new quota, while domestic producers gain a price buffer from the change.
