Why AI agents acting on your computer go off-script
New research identifies two root causes for AI computer agents deviating from user intent: external prompt injection attacks and the agents' own flawed reasoning.
AI systems that operate computers on a user's behalf, called computer-use agents, go off-task in two distinct ways. The first is external: attackers inject malicious instructions that hijack what the agent does.
The second is internal: the agent reasons incorrectly and takes wrong actions without any outside interference. New research formally maps both failure modes and introduces detection methods for each.
Without such safeguards, misaligned actions create safety risks and undermine the reliability these tools depend on.
Why it mattersAs AI agents handle more autonomous tasks, distinguishing failures caused by attacks from those caused by bad reasoning is critical for both security and user trust.
