A 1912 Alaska eruption was the 20th century's largest by far
Novarupta's 1912 eruption was the century's largest, releasing 30 times the magma of Mount St. Helens in 1980.
Novarupta is a volcano on the Alaska Peninsula, sitting on a slope of Trident Volcano in Katmai National Park and Preserve, roughly 290 miles southwest of Anchorage. It formed in 1912 during the largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century.
The blast released about 30 times the volume of magma produced by the far more famous 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. Despite its scale, Novarupta remains little known outside Alaska.
Why it mattersThe biggest eruption in a century happened in a remote corner of Alaska, which is why almost no one has heard of it.
