A Basque separatist car bomb killed 21 at a Barcelona store
The Basque separatist group ETA detonated a car bomb at a Barcelona shopping centre, killing 21 people and injuring 45.
The bomb tore through a Hipercor shopping centre in Barcelona, leaving 21 dead and 45 others wounded. ETA acted in the name of Basque nationalism, a movement holding that the Basques, an ethnic group native to the western Pyrenees, form a nation.
That movement seeks political unity for Basques, who today live split between Spain and France. Since emerging in the late nineteenth century, Basque nationalism has included campaigns for independence.
The attack became one of its deadliest moments.
Why it mattersThe attack shows how separatist violence over national identity can strike civilians far from any battlefield.
